Mashrabiya (مشربية), also known as shanshūl (شنشول) or rūshān (روشان), is the Arabic term given to a type of privacy wood screens made from intricate turned wood pieces put together to create a lattice screen used in the middle east as window screens or room divider. Nowadays, Mashrabiya is used as decorative grills inserted into doors, closets, bathroom and kitchen cabinet doors.
jali or jaali, (Hindi:जाली jālī, meaning "net") is the term for a lattice screen made using fretwork, an interlaced decorative design that is either carved in low relief on a solid background, or cut out with a fretsaw, coping saw, jigsaw or scroll saw. Most fretwork patterns are geometric in design, usually with an ornamental pattern constructed through the use of calligraphy and geometry. This form of architectural decoration is found in Indian architecture, Indo-Islamic Architecture and Islamic Moorish Architecture. Jali screens were used to help in lowering the temperature by compressing the air through the holes. Also when the air passes through these openings, its velocity increases giving profound diffusion. Jali screens are suitable to use as inserts for kitchen cabinet doors, bathroom doors, bedroom closet doors, windows, room divider, and bespoke furniture.
